Having successfully worked on a Nike Factory Store fit out in Manchester last year, B-DACS were commissioned to install the air conditioning for the retailer’s newest Scottish outlet.

It’s situated in Straiton Retail Park, Edinburgh, just at the foot of the Pentland Hills, and opened on 20th February 2014.

Toshiba Split Air Conditioning System

As with the Manchester project, we worked alongside SAS Contracts, who had the responsibility of transforming the empty retail unit into a fully-functioning Nike Store.

Our brief was to install and commission a Toshiba split air conditioning system as well as all the necessary ventilation equipment.

The system consists of five fan coil units and three air to air heat exchangers, intended to aid heat recovery and ventilation.

It was designed with customer comfort and energy efficiency in mind and will serve the sales area, stock room, staff room and manager’s office. Each area can be controlled separately through a central touchscreen controller.

Environmental Commitments and LEED Requirements

From the outset, Nike placed a strong emphasis on their environmental commitment. They wanted a building that would achieve a minimum LEED Bronze Certification, which meant we had to meet certain standards and fulfil specific requirements.

A key point of the project specification was that all ducting and pipework had to remain covered for the duration of the works. This ensured that no dust or dirt could get into the filters, as this could lead to efficiency losses and other issues when the system got up and running.

On the whole, the project was successful and we completed the commissioning in time for the grand opening. It was a tight programme and we encountered a couple of delays along the way, but there were never any concerns about getting the job done on schedule.
